Pilllow Buying Guide for Better Comfort, Support and Sleep

If you wake up stiff in the morning, experience back or neck discomfort, or are just not getting a good night’s rest then a new pillow may help.

For most of us, replacing worn pillows and cases and slips is something we all too often forget about. I mean come on, they are not that important right? WRONG! After about 2-3 years tops your lovely bed cushions and the like have accumulated pounds of dust, dust mites and microbes that are not only disgusting, but can adversely affect your health….especially if you or your sleeping mate have allergies. Not to mention that after a year or so they become lumpy and lose their support that you so dearly need.

With the right padding under your head, back and neck you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on anything….but inadequate support and comfort can lead to restless nights,  stiffness and soreness, and overall poor sleep.

Types of Pillows:

Well, there are three main types:

1. Decorative and Designer –used primarily to accent a room, bedding, or a couch. Usually not as comfortable as their main purpose is for the design, and are often expensive.

2. Orthopedic and Support – used as preventative and for treatment of back, knee, neck, leg and shoulder pain and discomfort.

3. Bed or Sofa – standard types used primarily for sleep, rest and comfort.

The right size, shape, and material can make all the difference -

The first thing you want to ask yourself is what position do you sleep in? The reason you need to ask yourself this is that there are designer pillows that will be tailored to each position and each having a different level of firmness depending on the level of support needed.

For those who sleep on their backs - Look into getting a slightly dense pillow for better back and neck support and spinal alignment.

For those who sleep on their sides – look into getting a moderately thick and medium density one that will aid in spinal alignment.

For those who sleep on their stomach – look for a long and thin pillow of a less firm nature that will extend under a portion of your body to ensure proper alignment of neck and back. Too thick of a padding for this position and you are asking for trouble.

Let’s talk about filling and material shall we -

Now days there are many options available from natural to synthetic and everything inbetween…

Below is a list of some of the most popular fillers used today:

Feather or down – VERY soft and plush, also one of the most expensive.

Wool – Medium density, good combination of comfort and support

Foam latex – Synthetic, good for those with allergies, and come in various densities

Polyester – synthetic, and on the cheaper side.

Buckwheat hull – unique combination of support and comfort, medium price range.

Cotton – one of the most common, fairly cheap, not that great on support, but do provide a decent level of comfort.

Each has varying benefits and downsides. We suggest you visit our site for in depth information on each. Which one will work best for you will depend largely on personal preference and the level of suppory actually needed.
