The contour pillow has become very popular these days, a stark contrast to when it was first designed my NASA to help improve sleeping and posture in astronots.
As the name suggests, the support feature of this pillow is the built in contour that is meant to provide support and align the neck and back in a natural position. When used properly, this pad can help improve circulation, open the airways, reduce tension and stress and eliminate pain caused by poor posture when asleep.
Most are made from a heat sensitive foam, sometimes called memory cushion, that responds to both pressure and heat. When you lay down on them they conform to the shape of your body and “hug” your neck and head in a perfect mold.
Another added benefit is that the material they are made from is hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria and mold. Because of this they make for a great choice if you suffer from allergies.
The first company to market these pillows to the general public was Tempur-Pedic®, but because of their popularity many other manufacturers have now developed their own models. In addition to pillows you can also find contour and memory foam mattresses, mattress padding, and the like.
When shopping around, you will want to pay particular attention to the density number on the side of the packaging. This tells you how firm the padding will be and how long the cushion will last. We suggest a number 4 or higher with these types of pads. The higher the number the more dense the foam padding will be, and consequently the more they will cost.
Cheaper models may not come with a density number and may not last as long. In our experience it is best to go with a name brand unless you are willing to replace them each year.
