Feather pillows, also known as down pillows, have been revered for centuries as a luxury. They are the softest, most plush, and not to mention expensive type of cushion you can rest your head on.
Because of their relative high cost, we wanted to give you a quick guide to help you in your quest for the perfect fit.
First, what exactly is “down” anyway? Well, down is the undercoating of a bird, in this case usually a duck or goose. The highest quality comes from Siberian geese. All feather down pillows are just that, a combination of each. The more down, the more it is going to cost you. Typically the ones in your local retail store will be mostly feathers, sometimes a bit of “other” filling, and then a little down.
Because of the relatively high cost, the sizes of these are limited to traditional shapes similar to those found on couches and beds. Below is an overview of the typical sizes available:
European 26 x 26"King 20 x 36Queen 20 x 30" Standard 20 x 26"
While the comfort of these cannot be beat, they do not offer as much support as your cotton, wool, or foam pillows do. Some however can be purchased with a “core” in the middle that can be made out of gel, wool, cotton, latex, etc. to provide a good blend of both comfort and support.
For those with allergies it is probably best to avoid these altogether, but some are touted as being “cleansed” and allergen free. I would only use these with a money back guarantee just in case you would still suffer allergenic problems after purchase.
Even though these may feel incredible to lay on, they may not be the best fit for you. Most manufacturers will give you a chart on the product that will give you an idea of the level of firmness and what you should look for depending on the position you sleep in. For example, those that sleep on their stomach should use a thinner down pillow so that your neck and spine aren't thrown into positions that are sure to cause back and neck pain.
Those sleeping on their backs should look for a medium density pillow to provide support and keep the spine in proper alignment at the cervical/neck region.
And for side sleepers, get the more substantial pillow so that your neck and spine are aligned throughout the night for the best sleep possible.
While local retail stores and specialty stores typically have limited selections at a hefty price, we found that online retailers offered better deals, a wider variety to choose from, and at often lower prices sometimes with delivery included.
