An orthopedic pillow is designed to put the spine, joints and muscles in the most natural position possible to alleviate tension and pain. There are several varieties to choose from, but all will focus on some aspect of the vertebral column.
One example is the neck pillow, which is also known as a cervical pillow. This type of pillow allows for support of the neck by allowing the head to rest in a deep area. There is also a supportive area that allows the neck to stay aligned with the spine while sleeping. This alleviates discomfort that can arise after a night of sleeping when the neck is not aligned.
Another example of an orthopedic pillow is the lumbar pillow. This type of pillow is designed to fit the lower portion of the back known as the lumbar curvature. There is a slight inward curve in this region and this type of pillow supports that curve. A lumbar pillow is typically used when a person is in the sitting position, but variations can be used for those that sleep on their backs at night.
Those pillows designed for the upright posture would therefore be used in an office chair or while driving. This provides a release of tension and alleviates the discomfort created by long hours at work or driving in a car.
While the lumbar and neck support cushions are the most common, others such as donut pads (for your bottom), knee support foam, side sleeping support, and full body pillows exist.
Regardless of the type, all of these pillows are designed to provide support and comfort, and are also meant to alleviate tension, pain, and stress. Some are even endorsed by various health organizations and it is best to speak to your healthcare provider when trying to find what will work best for your specific needs. For example, those suffering from a weak back or back pain will need a more firm padding, while those suffering from general discomfort may need a softer pillow or mattress padding.
