Anyone with a baby will tell you that there should not be anything in the crib with the child that could accidentally suffocate them. However, as the baby grows, many millions of parents all across the United States often begin incorporating traditional bedding in to their children's bedding units.
More often than not, these bedding changes involve the introduction of a toddler pillow. But as a parent, how do you know when it is the appropriate time to introduce pillows to your children for sleeping? And, what kind of pillow should you use for your child to sleep on?
By taking in to consideration the following rules of thumb, you can introduce your child to the wonders of sleeping on a pillow while keeping them completely safe in the process.
For starters, you do not want to introduce a toddler pillow to your child until you have checked with your pediatrician first, as they will often know the most up to date safety information for toddlers. However, most will agree a toddler s ready for a pillow when they are around 2 to 3 years of age.
Also, if you and your pediatrician determine your child is ready for a pillow -- additional signs to watch for aside from the age determination include using a stuffed animal or blankets bunched up as a pillow to sleep on -- then you want to make sure you do not provide your child with an adult sized pillow.
The typical measurements for a toddler pillow will be in the range of 12x16, which is just the right size for little heads to slumber on.
